Kelvin Grove Club played host to the 1st Cape Town International Beach Tennis event, while hosting the Davis Cup, South Africa vs. Bulgaria tie this past weekend.
While being played on a temporary court, the sand was sponsored by TSA partner Kwanza, which now sees Kelvin Grove having a permanent court for local players to regularly be able to play beach tennis and encourage new players to participate locally.
Both men’s and women’s doubles winners participated at the KIA National Finals earlier this year and the women’s winners, Jackie Booth and Lucinda Gibbs finished second at the Nationals, with Team KIA SA members, Michael de Jongh and Jody Claassen being the National s winner and runner up respectively with different partners.
More encouraging is that three of the four winners all reside in Cape Town, which allows for local competition to grow in strength.
