Bach to Back Titles for Irigaray and Spoto

12 Dec 2019 by Iain Smith

The second leg of the KIA Summer Slam Beach Tennis Tour came to a close on Thursday at Quaysyde in Cape St. Francis, Eastern Cape.

Last week’s Port Elizabeth event champions Theo Irigaray of France and Mattia Spoto of Italy claimed their second KIA Summer Slam Beach Tennis Tour title after edging out top seeds Manuel Ringlstetter of Germany and Gerard Rodríguez Querol of Spain 6-2 6-2.

Irigaray and Spoto had earlier defeated third seeds Satoshi Goda of Japan and Marco Mastrantoni of Italy to book their place in the final, fighting back to win 6-0 4-6 6-1.

Russian top seeds Julia Chubarova and Ekaterina Kamenetckaia made short work of Maire Bray of France and her Serbian partner Nina Djordevic to clinch the women’s doubles title with a straight sets win.

The Russian duo took just under an hour to defeat their third seeded opponents 6-1 6-3, to ease their way to a comfortable victory.

The KIA Motors South Africa sponsored tournament saw over 60 participants from 20 countries battle it out for honours.

Next and last stop is Plettenberg Bay which will kick off with another $3 000 ITF event from 14-17 December followed by the prestigious $35,000 ITF tournament running from 18-21 December at Central Beach.

Entries are still open for the remaining tournaments and can be done via email to ismith@tennissa.co.za.
